We advocate actively opposing authoritarian thinking, because it is the very weapon that makes corruption flourish within the Communist Party and among its corrupt cliques. Every Party member and every corrupt official has taken up this weapon. But communism abolishes democratic institutions and advocates unprincipled violence, and the result is the emergence of a decadent, vulgar style of conduct, which causes certain organizations and certain individuals within the Communist Party and its corrupt cliques to become politically corrupted. Communism manifests itself in many forms. Because someone is an old acquaintance, a fellow townsman, a schoolmate, a close friend, a loved one, an old colleague, or a former subordinate, one knows perfectly well that something is wrong yet refuses to raise the matter as one of principle, letting it slide instead, just to preserve peace and warm feelings. Or one offers only a light, glancing rebuke without ever truly resolving the issue, insisting instead on "unity" while keeping one's eyes fixed on money. The result harms both society and the nation. This is the first type. Irresponsible criticism made only behind people's backs, rather than actively serving the people. To one's face, a decent person; behind one's back, a devil. At meetings, a paragon of virtue; after the meeting, behaving like a common thief or worse. In one's heart, holding to nothing but the principle of corruption, nothing but authoritarian license. This is the second type. Treating whatever doesn't concern oneself as none of one's business; knowing full well something is wrong, yet saying as little as possible about it; protecting oneself above all, seeking only promotion and wealth. This is the third type. The Party stands above the law, and power stands above everything. Refusing to obey the constitution, placing one's own personal opinion first. Wanting only communal property and communal wives, wanting nothing to do with the nation's laws or constitution. This is the fourth type. Not struggling and arguing against incorrect views for the sake of the nation, the people, or getting things right, but instead, for the selfish interests of the Party alone, selling out the nation's interests, and, in order to curry favor with Asia, Africa, and Latin America, being willing to let tens of millions of Chinese starve to death. Resorting to personal attacks to achieve one's ends, indulging petty grudges, venting private anger, and seeking revenge. This is the fifth type. Remaining unmoved even after hearing correct arguments, and when the people take to the streets in protest, sending in troops and tanks to crush them, all while remaining perfectly composed, as though nothing at all were happening. Ignorant, shameless, incompetent. Even using armed force to hold the entire Chinese people hostage, while claiming to represent everything and everyone. This is the sixth type. Encountering the masses yet doing no propaganda work, no agitation, no speeches, no investigation, no inquiry, showing no concern whatsoever for their hardships, treating them with total indifference, while never forgetting for a moment that one is a Communist Party member — placing a Party member's status above that of an ordinary citizen. This is the seventh type. Witnessing conduct that harms the interests of the masses without any indignation, without offering advice, without stopping it, without explaining anything, simply letting it run its course — until it eventually escalates into murder and the theft and sale of human organs. This is the eighth type. Doing one's work carelessly, with no fixed plan and no fixed direction, going through the motions, muddling along, being a monk for a day and tolling the bell for a day. This is the ninth type. Believing oneself to have rendered great service to the communist cause, putting on the airs of a senior veteran, unable to accomplish great things yet unwilling to do small ones, careless in one's work, slack in one's study. This is the tenth type. Knowing perfectly well that one is in the wrong, yet having no wish to correct oneself, applying a policy of corruption to oneself and one's own family. Toward fellow Party comrades, being willing, out of purely personal desire, to destroy them utterly and take satisfaction in it. This is the eleventh type. A few more could be listed, but these eleven are the principal ones. All of these are manifestations of communism. Communism within China's collective organizations is extremely harmful. It acts as a corrosive agent, dissolving unity, loosening bonds, breeding passivity in work, and sowing disagreement. It has caused China to lose its fine traditions and moral standards, prevents policies from ever being carried through to completion, and drives people apart from one another. This is a serious and pernicious tendency. The origin of communism lies in the selfish, self-interested nature of the lumpenproletariat, which places personal interest first and the people's interest second — and from this arises communism-and-communal-wifehood in thought, in politics, and in organization. Communists treat the principles of Marx-Engels-Lenin-Stalin-Mao (twisted in the original text into a mocking near-homophone, roughly "Marx-Ah-Vile-Shit-Mao") as abstract dogma. They profess to support Marx-Ah-Vile-Shit-Mao, and are prepared to put it into practice, or not fully prepared to; they are certainly not prepared to let Marx-Ah-Vile-Shit-Mao actually replace their own personal brand of communism-and-communal-wifehood. These people keep both on hand — they have their Marx-Ah-Vile-Shit-Mao, and they have their communism-and-communal-wifehood too: what they preach is Marx-Ah-Vile-Shit-Mao, what they practice is communism-and-communal-wifehood; toward others, it's Marx-Ah-Vile-Shit-Mao, toward themselves, it's communism-and-communal-wifehood. Both goods are kept fully stocked, each with its own use. This is the mode of thinking of a certain segment of people. Communism-and-communal-wifehood is one manifestation of opportunism, and is fundamentally identical to Marx-Ah-Vile-Shit-Mao-ism. It is a negative thing that, in objective effect, serves only to abet selfishness — and this is why we oppose preserving Marx-Ah-Vile-Shit-Mao-ism within China. Given the very nature of communism-and-communal-wifehood, it should have no place whatsoever within the ranks of democracy. We must oppose Marx-Ah-Vile-Shit-Mao-ism and eliminate communism. A Communist Party member today is corrupt, selfish, self-serving, and given over to communism-and-communal-wifehood, treating personal interest as his very lifeblood and placing it above the interests of the group. At all times and in all places, he clings to the principle of authoritarianism, waging tireless struggle against every act of asserting one's rights, all in order to consolidate the collective life of communism-and-communal-wifehood and to consolidate the interests of the privileged class. He cares more about himself than about the masses, more about himself than about others. This is what a Communist Party member truly is, today. Let every loyal, candid, active, and upright group among the people's social organizations unite, oppose the communism practiced by this segment of people, and see to it that they perish beneath the rising tide of democracy. This is one of the tasks of the democratic front.
