In 1969, Milovan Djilas wrote in his book The Unperfect Society: "Contemporary Marxism is a form of totalitarianism possessing three basic elements by which it controls the people: first, power; second, ownership; and third, ideology. These elements are monopolized by a single party, a new class — and are currently held exclusively by the oligarchs of that party or that class. No totalitarian system in history has ever controlled its people to this degree." Party authority reaches into every corner of society through its grassroots Party branches, which are established in every workshop, village, town, and military unit, forming society's one and only nervous system, one that manipulates every cell of the social body and controls every activity of every individual. Later, Mussolini, imitating Lenin's methods, organized the Italian Fascist Party and referred to these Party branches as "the capillary tissue of the regime." Party organizations spread through the body of society like capillaries, and no social group, no matter how insignificant, can escape the communist party's control. The degree to which communist totalitarianism controls people exceeds that of any regime in history. Mere authoritarianism concerns itself only with politics, but totalitarianism concerns itself with everything — from one's work unit down to one's neighborhood alley, from the clothes one wears to the hairstyle one keeps, from the body to the soul, from the cradle to the grave — "ruling the sky above, the earth below, and even the very air in between." Totalitarianism is authoritarianism in its most total form: the total deprivation of citizens' freedom, carried out through a secretive dossier system that subjects every single person to organizational evaluation and disposition. The Party is both the creator of these dossiers and the examiner and evaluator of every individual; the dossier records a person's personal information and life history, and its core function is the Party organization's political vetting, assessment, and evaluation of each individual — an organizational verdict and any political black mark will follow a person for their entire life, determining their schooling, employment, promotion, transfers, and even their marriage. Lightless concentration camps and gulags, labor reform camps and re-education-through-labor camps, all-pervasive coercive brainwashing and deception — the web of tyranny reaches everywhere; marriage, migration, education, belief, speech and conduct, childbearing, employment, housing, thought itself — none of it escapes the communist party's grip. Gennady Zyuganov, leader of the Russian Communist Party, said that the Soviet Communist Party's collapse came about because it violated the people's will through its "triple monopoly" system — that is, an ideological system that monopolized truth, a political-legal system that monopolized power, and a feudal system of privilege that monopolized benefit.
